Is it a cataract?

Signs your lens may be clouding

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. It usually develops slowly, so many people adjust without noticing until everyday tasks become harder.

Only an eye examination can confirm a cataract and rule out other causes, such as retinal or diabetic eye disease, which matter just as much for your vision.

Cloudy or blurred vision

As if looking through a misted window.

Glare and haloes

Especially from headlights and lamps at night.

Faded colours

Colours look washed out or yellowish.

Frequent power changes

Glasses seem to stop working within months.

Needing more light

Reading and close work need brighter light.

Double vision in one eye

Ghosting that persists with the other eye closed.

Who is at risk

Cataract is common, especially after 50

Most cataracts are age-related, but some people develop them earlier.

Age over 50

The single biggest factor. Most people develop some clouding with age.

Diabetes

Cataracts tend to appear earlier, and the retina also needs regular checks.

Long-term steroids

Tablets, inhalers or eye drops used over long periods.

Eye injury or past surgery

Trauma or earlier eye operations can lead to cataract.

Smoking and UV exposure

Both are linked to earlier cataract formation.

High myopia

People with very high minus power may develop cataract sooner.

Your cataract journey

From first check-up to clear vision

Detailed eye examination

Vision, eye pressure and a dilated check of the retina, so we know your cataract is the main cause and nothing is missed.

Measurements and lens planning

Precise measurements of your eye to calculate the lens power, and an unhurried discussion of the lens options that suit your lifestyle.

Surgery by Dr. Somya

A day-care procedure under anaesthetic drops at a partner hospital such as Eye Veda, Synergy Eye Care or Fortis. The clouded lens is removed through a tiny incision and replaced with a clear artificial lens.

Recovery and follow-up

Eye drops for a few weeks and planned follow-up visits. Most people return to light routine activities within a few days.

Lens options

Choosing the right lens for your eyes

Dr. Somya offers the full range of intraocular lenses. The lens implanted during surgery stays for life, so we’ll explain which option suits your eyes, work and hobbies.

Lens

Monofocal

Sharp vision at one distance, usually far. Reading glasses are typically needed for close work.

Lens

Toric

Also corrects astigmatism, for crisper vision without thick cylindrical power.

Premium lens

Multifocal / trifocal

Vision at far, intermediate and near distances. Some people notice haloes around lights at night.

Premium lens

EDOF (extended depth of focus)

A continuous range from far to intermediate, with fewer night-time haloes. Readers may be needed for fine print.

Eye measurements and retina imaging before cataract surgery at Theia

The Theia difference

A retina specialist checks the back of your eye too

A cataract can hide problems behind it, such as diabetic retinopathy or macular changes. These can limit how well you see after surgery if they aren’t found and treated.

Because Dr. Somya is trained in retina, your retina is examined carefully before surgery and reviewed again afterwards. This matters most for people with diabetes, high myopia or previous retinal problems.

  • Dilated retina examination before surgery
  • Extra care for people with diabetes
  • Honest advice on what vision to expect

FAQs

Cataract surgery questions

Is cataract surgery painful?

The eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops, and most people feel only mild pressure during the procedure. Some scratchiness for a day or two afterwards is common.

When is the right time for surgery?

When the cataract starts to affect daily life, such as reading, driving or recognising faces. Modern techniques mean you don’t need to wait for a cataract to “ripen”.

How long does recovery take?

Vision often improves within a few days. You’ll use eye drops for a few weeks, and your final glasses prescription (if needed) is usually given once the eye has settled, typically around a month later.

Can a cataract come back?

No. The cataract is removed permanently. Some people later develop clouding of the thin membrane behind the new lens. If this happens it’s treated with a quick, painless laser procedure in the clinic.

Will I still need glasses?

It depends on the lens you choose. With a monofocal lens most people need reading glasses. Multifocal, trifocal and EDOF lenses can reduce dependence on glasses.

Where will my surgery be done?

Dr. Somya performs cataract surgery at leading Delhi eye hospitals, including Eye Veda, Synergy Eye Care and Fortis Hospital. Your consultation, tests and follow-up visits stay at Theia in Vasant Kunj.

Are both eyes operated on the same day?

Usually not. Each eye is generally done separately, a few days to a few weeks apart, so the first eye can settle.

How much does cataract surgery cost?

The cost depends mainly on the lens you choose and any special tests needed. We explain the options and charges clearly before you decide. Message us on WhatsApp for details.
